LONDON – Amnesty International has highlighted instances where Israeli attacks violated international humanitarian law, either by failing to take precautions to avoid civilian casualties or by carrying out strikes that did not discriminate between military targets and civilian areas.
These findings come after detailed investigations into five specific air strikes between October 7 and 12, where high civilian casualties were reported.
The attacks, often on residential areas, resulted in the tragic loss of entire families, with no clear evidence of military targets in the vicinity.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, emphasized the disregard for civilian lives, pointing to the devastating impact on residential areas, essential infrastructure, and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
One of the most grievous incidents cited includes an October 7 attack on a residential building, which claimed the lives of 15 members of the al-Dos family, including seven children. Amnesty International found no evidence of military targets in the area.
Another incident on October 8 saw an Israeli airstrike hitting the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of Mohammed and Shuruq al-Naqla and two of their children.
Tragically, on October 9, Israeli airstrikes struck a bustling market in the Jabalia refugee camp, killing at least 69 people. This market street, known for its high commercial activity, suffered significant civilian casualties.
On October 10, an Israeli airstrike on a family home claimed the lives of 12 members of the Hijazi family and four of their neighbors in Gaza City’s al-Sahaba Street, including three children.
Amnesty International’s Crisis Evidence Lab scrutinized six videos depicting the aftermath of the Jabalia camp market airstrike.
Their analysis, supported by witness testimony, satellite imagery, and verified videos, concludes that the attack, which resulted in a high number of civilian casualties, should be investigated as a potential war crime.
The organization is urging the international community to enforce a comprehensive arms embargo against Israel and calling for an immediate end to these attacks.
Based on these findings, Amnesty International is calling for a full investigation into these incidents as potential war crimes and urging an expedited inquiry by the International Criminal Court.
The report stresses the urgent need for justice to prevent further violence and instability in the region.
Amnesty International has called for urgent international intervention to provide necessary aid and to pressure Israel to lift the blockade, deemed a collective punishment of Gaza’s civilian population.
