Algeria celebrates cinematic excellence with Cirta Short Film Days
Event showcases Algeria’s thriving short film industry and supports young filmmakers through training, screenings, and cultural exchange
CONSTANTINE, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria has launched the first edition of the Cirta Short Film Days – a landmark event that celebrates the growing impact of short filmmaking in the country.
The event will take place from April 12 to 15 at the Mohamed-Tahar-Fergani Regional Theater and the Abdelhamid-Ben Badis Cultural Center in Constantine, with a program designed to both showcase national cinematic talent and encourage the next generation of filmmakers.
During a press conference held at the Mohamed-Tahar-Fergani Regional Theater, Hamza Kech, president of the Ibdaâ Association and initiator of the festival, emphasized that the event marks a significant step forward for Algerian cinema.
Of the 45 short films submitted, 12 have been selected to compete, each tackling critical social and dramatic themes that reflect the country’s vibrant storytelling tradition.
Kech explained that the event’s primary goal is to promote cinematic activity in Algeria, support cultural production, and encourage investment in the national film industry.
A jury composed of prominent directors, actors, and film critics will evaluate the shortlisted films, selecting the most outstanding works for recognition.
In addition to film screenings, the Cirta Short Film Days will include specialized training workshops for youth, covering scriptwriting, cinematography, and editing.
These sessions, led by seasoned professionals, aim to build technical capacity and artistic vision among young Algerians eager to enter the film industry.
The program also features open discussions with filmmakers, providing valuable networking and mentorship opportunities for aspiring directors and creatives.
Organizers announced that, out of respect and solidarity with Gaza, the musical concert initially scheduled for the opening ceremony has been canceled.
Moreover, out-of-competition screenings will allow for broader participation and exchange, giving the public access to diverse short film experiences and offering emerging filmmakers a chance to present their work on a national platform.
The organizers expressed hope that the Cirta Short Film Days will become a permanent fixture on Algeria’s cultural calendar, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a hub of artistic innovation and creative expression.
The event also serves as a launchpad for young talent, helping to bring Algerian stories to regional and international audiences.
This initiative highlights Algeria’s growing momentum in cinematic production and underscores the state’s continued investment in fostering cultural industries and youth development.
With the successful organization of this event, Algeria positions itself as a regional leader in short filmmaking and reaffirms its commitment to supporting arts and culture as essential pillars of national identity.
