‘Al Arouri’s assassination to intensify resistance’
Palestinian Territories – AFP
The killing of Hamas leader Saleh Al Arouri will intensify the resistance of Palestinians, say people interviewed by AFP in Rafah.
Mahdi Abou Muhamaad is a young resident of Rafah. He thinks the assassination will intensify the Hamas resistance “because al-Aruri is a man of stature. His assassination is not going to harm the resistance.”
He says, “We are waiting for Hezbollah’s response, as Hassan Nasrallah said, any assassination of a Palestinian, Arab, or Lebanese figure will be faced with a harsh and severe response. So we are waiting for Nasrallah’s response. God willing it will avenge the Palestinian people and the grieving people of Gaza.”
Abou al-Baraa, another Rafah resident is certain that the resistance will carry on undeterred. “Throughout our Palestinian cause and the wars of those seeking liberation; leaders, eminent individuals, and soldiers have become martyrs. However, but this doesn’t affect the history of the conflict, on the contrary, the assassination of leaders rather fuels the revolution.”
Al Baraa believes there is no end in sight to Netanyahu’s war on Gaza, and that the war serves to keep him in power. “Netanyahu’s (political) life is tightly connected to the war. As long as there’s a war, he is in power, once the war stops, he will appear before the court and he will be trialed in Zionist (Israeli) courts. Therefore he doesn’t want the war to stop, he wants to show a victory through the assassination of the leader Saleh al-Aruri.”
Samir Al-Modalal is a political analyst who agrees with this view. “Netanyahu, faced with his significant failures in Israeli internal affairs, is now seeking to project an image of victory through the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri or other prominent figures.”
Al-Modalal believes the resilience and resolve of the people of Gaza is unfazed and the resistance movements will not be beaten down by this loss. “It’s a revolution of people and their struggle continues, and it won’t be stopped because of an assassination of a leader here or there.”
