African leaders discuss peace prospects for Sudan
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) – Leaders of the East African regional bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) met Monday to discuss the conflict in Sudan.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed hosted the meeting, which was chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto.
The regional bloc called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to observe an unconditional ceasefire.
They also called on them to establish a humanitarian zone with a 30-kilometer radius in the capital, Khartoum, to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Ruto said the intensity and scale of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan requires a bold and all-inclusive peace dialog.
“The situation in Sudan is dire: millions of people have been displaced while lives lost have hit more than 2,000,” he said.
He said these steps would lead to a political process and pave the way for the formation of an inclusive transitional system.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee was in Ethiopia on Monday.
