Afghan teen receives Children’s Peace Prize for advocacy of girls’ rights
17-year-old Nila Ibrahimi has won the prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize for her advocacy of girls’ rights in Afghanistan.
Awarded in Amsterdam on Nov. 19, Ibrahimi was praised for her courageous work in championing the rights of Afghan girls amid the Taliban’s oppressive rule.
After the group’s return to power in 2021, Ibrahimi fled Afghanistan with her family, first to Pakistan and then to Canada, where she currently lives.
The Taliban’s actions have drawn widespread condemnation, including from Muslim scholars, for their violations of human rights, particularly of women and girls.
The young activist’s efforts have inspired many worldwide, creating hope for young people facing adversity.
