Activists criticize hypocrisy of Indigenous Peoples Day amid US support to Israeli actions
On Indigenous Peoples Day, human rights advocates highlighted the contradictions of celebrating the holiday while the US supports Israel’s war in Gaza.
Activists, including Jewish American scholar Benay Blend, emphasized the shared colonial struggles of Native Americans and Palestinians.
Native Hawaiian professor Uahikea Maile said the day should focus on survival against settler colonialism, urging celebrations should condemn Israel’s destruction of Palestinian lives.
Palestinian-American activist and author Sumaya Awad noted the hypocrisy in US claims of honoring Indigenous rights while funding what she described as the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
Activists say true recognition of Indigenous struggles must include solidarity with Palestinians in their fight against colonization.
