ACLU to sue Biden over new asylum policy
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) plans to sue President Joe Biden over a new executive order that restricts asylum for migrants crossing the southern border without authorization.
Biden’s order, similar to a Trump-era policy, uses Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to deny asylum when border encounters exceed 2,500 daily.
The border will reopen only when numbers drop below 1,500.
The ACLU argues this policy will endanger vulnerable migrants, forcing them into expedited deportations.
Deirdre Schifeling of the ACLU criticized the policy, urging Biden to honor his campaign promise to restore asylum and adopt humane immigration solutions.
The ACLU is advocating “balanced and humane solutions” including “improving processing at ports of entry and addressing the immigration case backlog by investing in immigration court judges and legal representation.”
Critics liken Biden’s approach to former President Donald Trump’s, warning it will worsen risks for migrants and fail to fix the immigration system.
