ACLU And Ohio State Senate Support Muslim Woman’s Victory
An Ohio Muslim student’s activism has led to the passage of a state law allowing athletes in hijab to compete in sports.
Noor Alexandria Abukaram decided to fight to change the rules after being disqualified in 2019 during a cross country state meet for wearing a hijab.
The 18-year-old athlete’s campaign #LetNoorRun garnered national attention and messages of support.
Her mission to get Senate Bill 181 passed was supported by Muslim, Jewish and Christian advocacy and community groups, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union.
Governor Michael DeWine signed SB181 into law last month, after it had been passed unanimously through both the State House and Senate.
The legislation protects the religious expression rights of student-athletes and those who engage in other extracurricular activities.
