Absence of Xi, Putin and China-India tensions to affect outcome of G-20 summit
Experts say summit is opportunity for world’s richest countries to come together and address some of the planet’s most pressing challenges
NEW DELHI, India – Chinese President Xi Jinping will skip the G-20 summit for the first time since taking office in 2012.
The summit will be held this weekend in the Indian capital of New Delhi.
Indian External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar said Xi’s absence will not affect negotiations to produce a consensus communique.
This week, China announced that Premier Li Qiang, who has been in office since March, will represent the country at the meeting.
China has said that relations with India have remained “generally stable.”
However, there are a number of issues that strain relations, including a border dispute, trade tensions and India’s growing strategic relationship with the U.S.
Experts believe that some of this tension will overshadow the summit.
The two countries will likely use the meeting to outwit each other and reaffirm their respective positions.
India recently surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation, and the two countries are rivals in computers, steel production, space exploration and other high-tech areas.
The summit is an opportunity for the world’s richest countries to come together and address some of the planet’s most pressing challenges.
However, the absence of Xi and Putin and the ongoing tensions between China and India will make it difficult to achieve anything meaningful.
