Israel’s House Arrest Of Palestinian Children Under Fire
On Thursday, a human rights organization decried Israel’s policy of placing Palestinian children 14 years and younger under house arrest.
The Beirut-based Palestinian Association for Human Rights, known as Shahed, said Israeli authorities continue to oppress Palestinians, especially residents of Jerusalem.
Shahed said Israel’s policy of house arrest aims to reduce the number of children in prisons “to preserve its alleged democratic image before the international community.”
Palestinian children are confined in their houses or that of a family member with ankle monitors to track their movement.
Data compiled by prisoners’ rights groups show 500 to 700 Palestinian children are detained annually by Israeli forces, with about 130 children under house arrest.
