6 migrants die in shipwreck near Greece
At least six irregular migrants have died in a shipwreck in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Greece’s Lesbos Island.
The accident came to be noticed when a passerby witnessed the bodies of the migrants washed ashore by the sea.
The Greek Coast Guard is currently operating a large-scale search and rescue operation in the area to locate possible survivors.
According to a statement by the Coast Guard, the six bodies that were found did not have life jackets.
The cause of the shipwreck is still unknown.
According to the UN migration agency, at least 4,470 migrants fleeing from conflict ridden countries in the Middle East and North Africa died along migration routes in Europe in 2021.
On the other hand, as the Ukraine conflict continues, European Union member states have expressed readiness to accept all refugees from Ukraine unconditionally.
