2022 Winter Olympics To Begin Wednesday: Game To See U.S. Led Diplomatic Boycott
The 2022 Olympic Winter Games began yesterday in Beijing under the cloud of a U.S.-led diplomatic boycott and the coronavirus pandemic.
The opening ceremony is Friday and the Games continue through Feb. 20.
The United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia have each announced a diplomatic boycott of the games, over concerns about China’s human rights record.
That means there will not be official delegations or ministers of these countries for the games.
However, their athletes will participate in the Olympics in Beijing.
In a press conference last December, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said “US diplomatic or official representation would treat these games as business as usual” in the face of China’s egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang.
Beijing is set to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
The Chinese capital previously hosted the 2008 Summer Games.
