Judge Rejects Travis McMichael’s Plea Deal In Federal Case Over Ahmaud Arbery’s Murder
A U.S. District Court judge Monday rejected a plea deal allowing a white man convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery to serve a large part of his sentence in federal prison.
Judge Lisa Godbey Wood’s decision rejecting Travis McMichael’s plea agreement with federal prosecutors came after emotional statements by Arbery’s parents and two aunts.
They asked the judge to reject the deal and proceed with a federal trial next week.
A second hearing on a plea deal the government’s attorneys negotiated with McMichael’s 66-year-old father was also scheduled on Monday.
Wood said her decision would be the same in the father Gregory McMichael’s case.
The McMichaels were convicted on state charges in the February 23, 2020 murder of twenty-five-year-old Arbery, who was jogging in Glynn County, Georgia when the McMichaels killed him.
