British Muslim Member Of Parliament Says She Was Sacked As Minister Because Of Her Faith
Nusrat Ghani, the UK’s leading Conservative Party MP and former minister said Saturday she was sacked from her ministerial position because of her faith.
Ghani’s accusation came in a special interview with The Sunday Times.
She is Britain’s first female Muslim minister
The 49-year-old MP was sacked as transport minister in February of 2020 in a reshuffle after the resignation of Sajid Javid as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Ghani claimed she was told by a party whip that her “Muslimness was raised as an issue” at a meeting in Downing Street.
She was also told her “Muslim women minister status was making colleagues feel uncomfortable,” according to the Times.
Ghani said her loyalty to the Conservative Party was questioned, and that she was told she “didn’t do enough to defend the party against Islamophobia allegations.’”
The British government has ordered an investigation into Ghani’s allegations.
