SENATE REPUBLICANS FILIBUSTER VOTING RIGHTS BILL
Two attempts by Democrats failed to pass a bill on voting rights Wednesday evening.
Democrats needed 10 Republicans to vote with them to clear the 60-vote threshold to break a filibuster.
They failed to achieve that.
Then their attempt to temporarily weaken the filibuster rule to allow a majority to pass the bill also failed as 2 Democratic Senators, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, voted with Republicans to block that.
The filibuster in an evenly divided Senate gives the minority party veto power over most legislation.
After the vote failed, there was a loud round of applause from Republicans.
The Senate GOP’s obstruction Wednesday marked the fifth time that Republicans have filibustered voting rights legislation in recent months.
