ISRAEL POLICE IN STANDOFF WITH PALESTINIANS OVER JERUSALEM EVICTION
Israeli police were in a standoff Monday with a Palestinian man who carried a gas canister onto the roof of his home in Jerusalem.
The man’s family has been facing the threat of eviction since 2017 in the flashpoint Sheikh Jarrah area of Israel-annexed east Jerusalem.
Israeli media reported Mohammed Salhiya had threatened to set himself on fire if the eviction order was carried out.
The family have lived in the home since the 1950s.
It is situated on land allocated for school construction.
Police and the Jerusalem municipality said the Salhiyas had ignored “countless opportunities” to vacate the land as ordered.
