Francophone week underway in Kyrgyzstan with concerts, films, conferences
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (MNTV) — A week-long celebration of French language and culture is under way in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek under the theme “French as a Window to the World.”
The festival, which runs till April 12, is coordinated by the French Alliance in Bishkek in partnership with the embassies of France, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Morocco, and the European Union Delegation. It includes more than 30 concerts, films, and conferences.
Francophonie Week is celebrated every spring in countries around the world, spotlighting the French language and the cultures of French-speaking nations. According to organizers, the program in Bishkek includes concerts, film screenings, educational conferences, and cultural events open to the public.
On April 11, the Swiss comedy “Roll the Drum” will be screened at Cinema Russia. The film is in French with Russian subtitles.
Film screenings by French, Belgian, and Canadian directors are taking place throughout the week at the French Alliance (242 Ogonbaeva St.) and the House of Cinema (13 Logvinenko St.), with free entry.
French is spoken by over 300 million people across five continents and is the fifth most spoken language globally. It is also the third most used business language and one of the key languages of diplomacy. A total of 88 countries are members of the International Organization of La Francophonie, with 29 recognizing French as an official language.
