Egypt launches ‘El-Leila El-Kebira Everywhere’ to celebrate cultural heritage
CAIRO, Egypt (MNTV) — Egypt’s Ministry of Culture has launched “El-Leila El-Kebira Everywhere,” a new initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Egyptian heritage.
The project seeks to bring the cultural significance of El-Leila El-Kebira (The Grand Night), an iconic puppet show, to diverse audiences in schools, universities, clubs, and tourist destinations.
First performed over half a century ago, El-Leila El-Kebira remains a cornerstone of Egypt’s puppet art, representing the country at international festivals.
The operetta, created by Salah Jahin, Sayed Makkawi, and Salah El-Sakka, continues to resonate deeply within Egyptian cultural memory.
Minister of Culture Ahmed Fouad Hanno emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “El-Leila El-Kebira is an iconic work that embodies authentic Egyptian identity.
It was essential to introduce it to new generations in various settings, as a singular artistic piece that expresses Egypt’s rich heritage.”
As part of the project, the Ministry has collaborated with Konouz Company to produce distinctive replicas of El-Leila El-Kebira dolls.
These dolls, bearing the “Made in Egypt” label, will soon be available for purchase, offering a local product that reflects Egyptian identity and heritage.
The Ministry’s vision, according to Hanno, is to transform El-Leila El-Kebira into a comprehensive cultural project with broad appeal, both domestically and internationally.
Performances will be staged in multiple locations, using innovative staging techniques tailored to each venue and audience.
This approach ensures that the operetta reaches diverse age groups and social backgrounds, fostering a deeper connection to Egypt’s cultural legacy.
Khaled Galal, Head of the Cultural Production Sector, confirmed that the initiative is part of a broader effort to celebrate Egypt’s unique heritage.
This includes presenting “Kheima Hal Helalak” shows and El-Leila El-Kebira concerts across various governorates as part of the Confrontation and Touring Theatre’s activities.
The project will also feature in Egyptian festivals and cultural weeks abroad.
Ahmed Obaid, Advisor to the Minister of Culture for Investment, outlined the project’s phased approach.
The initial phase will target schools and clubs, with plans to expand performances to universities and tourist areas.
Continuous shows in different locations aim to ensure the broadest possible reach among the Egyptian public.
The “El-Leila El-Kebira Everywhere” initiative underscores the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to preserving Egypt’s artistic heritage while introducing it to new generations.
By blending tradition with innovation, the project aims to strengthen cultural identity and promote Egyptian heritage on both national and international stages.
