Afghan taekwondo athlete wins silver at Belgium Open
KABUL, Afghanistan (MNTV) — Afghan taekwondo star Farzad Mansouri won a silver medal at the Open Taekwondo Championships held in Belgium, defeating top competitors from France and the Netherlands before narrowly losing to an American opponent in the final, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.
The tournament, which took place from March 15 to 16, featured participants from the United States, Canada, and various European countries.
Mansouri told Pajhwok that he overcame his French rival in the opening round and then bested a Dutch athlete to reach the final.
Mansouri, born in Parwan province of Afghanistan and currently based in Manchester, England, rose to prominence after winning a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships in Jordan.
He carried Afghanistan’s flag at the Tokyo Olympic Games and competed in the men’s +80 kg taekwondo event.
Mansouri also secured a bronze medal last month at the Taekwondo “Open G2” International Championships in Turkey.
