Defiant and unbroken: Uyghur women lead fight for justice
World Uyghur Congress honours the resilience of Uyghur women who continue to resist Chinese oppression despite forced sterilization, detention, and persecution
MUNICH, Germany (MNTV) – The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has paid tribute to the unwavering strength of Uyghur women, who remain at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and justice despite facing relentless persecution by Chinese authorities.
The recognition comes on International Women’s Day, highlighting their role in resisting state oppression.
In a statement on X, WUC emphasized that Uyghur women—from mothers seeking answers about missing relatives to activists raising their voices against human rights abuses—are playing a crucial role in the fight against China’s systematic crackdown on their community.
In the Xinjiang region, also known as East Turkestan, Uyghur women are subjected to severe human rights violations, including forced sterilizations, arbitrary detentions, and coercive policies designed to erase their cultural identity.
Despite these harsh conditions, they continue to demonstrate extraordinary resilience, defying state oppression to preserve their heritage and future generations.
WUC also accused the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of targeting Uyghur women based on their ethnicity, faith, and gender. It pointed to forced abortions, sterilizations, and coerced marriages as part of a broader state-sponsored effort to suppress Uyghur birthrates and weaken the community’s future.
Meanwhile, the advocacy group Campaign for Uyghurs echoed these concerns, stating, “A society cannot survive when its women are under attack.”
The group further asserted that the genocide and rights violations faced by Uyghur women extend beyond physical abuse, affecting every aspect of their existence.
Despite Beijing’s continued denials, international human rights organizations and activists continue to call for urgent global action to end the ongoing repression of Uyghur women and hold China accountable for its policies in Eastern Turkistan officially called Xinjiang.
