103 migrants refuse to go to home countries after US deportation
A group of 103 migrants deported from the U.S. to Panama is refusing to return to their home countries.
Most are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and India.
Panama Security Minister Frank Abrego confirmed their refusal at a press conference.
Some held signs reading, “Please help us” and “We are not safe in our country.”
The migrants are staying in a hostel in San Vicente, Darien.
Meanwhile, 101 others have returned home with more departures planned soon.
The International Organization for Migration is arranging relocation for those refusing repatriation.
A Chinese national tried to escape but was recaptured in Costa Rica and sent back to Panama.
Panama reports a drop in migration through the Darién jungle.
Only 2,607 people crossed in 2025, a sharp decline from 66,303 last year.
In Colombia’s Necoclí, migrant numbers have fallen from 1,000 per day to just 60.
Authorities say tougher U.S. migration policies have led to a reverse migration trend.
