Taliban to release British couple ‘as soon as possible’
ISTANBUL (AA) – Afghanistan’s interim Taliban administration said that it will work to free two British nationals arrested in the country “as soon as possible”, BBC reported on Monday.
Peter Reynolds, 79, and his wife Barbie, 75, were detained on Feb. 1 while they were heading to their home in Bamiyan province in central Afghanistan.
An American national and an Afghan citizen were also arrested with the British couple, according to a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry.
The UK Foreign Office said Monday that it was supporting the family of the couple.
Abdul Mateen Qani, a Taliban official said: “After evaluation, we will endeavor to release them as soon as possible.”
He further noted that the arrested foreign nationals had Afghan passports and national ID cards.
The reason for the couple’s arrest has not been confirmed.
