Mass exodus: 4 New York deputy mayors resign over Adams’ Trump deal
Four deputy mayors in New York City have resigned over Mayor Eric Adams’ alleged deal with Donald Trump’s administration.
They say they are staying true to their oaths and can no longer serve under the embattled mayor.
Maria Torres-Springer, Meera Joshi, Anne Williams-Isom, and Chauncey Parker announced their decision on Monday.
Their exit follows a growing scandal.
Adams is accused of offering immigration enforcement support in exchange for having his corruption case dismissed.
The mayor was indicted last year for bribery, campaign finance violations, and conspiracy.
The resignations come just days after Danielle Sassoon, the interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, also stepped down.
She cited pressure from the Justice Department to drop charges against Adams as her reason for leaving.
City leaders, including City Comptroller Brad Lander and Councilmember Shahana Hanif, are calling for Adams to resign.
Lander is considering invoking a special committee to remove him.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warns that the city is on the brink of a governance crisis.
