Trump administration fires thousands in federal job purge
The Trump administration has begun firing thousands of federal workers as part of its plan to cut government spending.
Several federal agencies have terminated probationary employees, including the Departments of Education, Energy, and Veterans Affairs.
The Office of Personnel Management confirmed the move, saying probationary periods are not guarantees of permanent jobs.
The mass dismissals follow a voluntary resignation buyout that saw 77,000 federal workers leave.
However, that is only 3% of the administration’s target.
Experts predict more than 200,000 federal jobs may be cut.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) has slammed the firings, calling them politically motivated rather than performance-based.
AFGE President Everett Kelley accused the administration of gutting federal agencies and silencing workers.
Elon Musk, leading the new Department of Government Efficiency is also targeting agencies like USAID for staff cuts.
