Muslim women-only gym gain popularity in Minnesota’s twin cities
Muslim women in Minnesota’s Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are embracing women-only fitness spaces.
These gyms allow them to work out freely, with or without a hijab.
Hawa Women’s Health Club opened in August to meet this demand.
It joins Hers Fitness and Miriam Fitness Gym, offering women-only workout spaces.
The gyms provide strength training, weightlifting, boxing, and self-defense classes.
Founder of Hawa, Fatma Sheekh, struggled to exercise comfortably in co-ed gyms.
She launched a survey to gauge interest in women-only fitness spaces and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Hawa now operates across three locations, offering resistance training, yoga, and wellness workshops.
Free self-defense classes are also planned.
Miriam Mongare, owner of Miriam Fitness Gym, says more Muslim women are taking up weightlifting.
A fourth women-only gym is currently in the works in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
