Bragg is back: Pentagon restores historic base name
The Pentagon is renaming military base Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed the order, fulfilling a campaign promise by President Donald Trump.
The North Carolina base was originally named after Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general who owned slaves and lost several key battles in the Civil War.
It was renamed under former President Joe Biden in June 2023 to remove links to the Confederacy.
That move followed years of effort to remove Confederate-linked names from military bases.
A Pentagon spokesperson claims the new name now honors Roland Bragg, a World War II hero awarded the Silver Star.
In a video posted on X, Hegseth, a former soldier at the base who supported keeping the original name declared, “Bragg is back.”
Pentagon officials say the change highlights the base’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
Fort Bragg is one of the world’s largest military bases and houses 52,000 personnel.
