Trump pushes to defund, dismantle education department
President Donald Trump is planning an executive order to defund and dismantle the Department of Education, aiming for its eventual closure.
The Washington Post reported that about 20 staff members from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have joined the Education Department.
Their aim is to cut costs and trim staff.
Musk’s department is a new advisory committee, but not a Cabinet division of the government.
Local media report that if the Department of Education is shut down, it would fulfill a longtime goal of many conservatives.
They have strongly criticized it under former President Joe Biden, especially over student loan forgiveness and expanded LGBTQ protections.
As well, conservatives have long argued that education should be a local responsibility, and claiming that liberals try to use federal mandates to promote left-wing ideas.
Trump’s executive order will not shut down the department, as only Congress can do that.
While legislation to eliminate the Education Department is possible, it would require 60 Senate votes.
These must include those of at least seven Democrats, who generally support the department.
