New York recognises ‘World Hijab Day’
The New York State Senate has designated Feb. 1 as World Hijab Day.
The resolution, introduced by Sen. Roxanne Persaud, promotes religious tolerance and cultural understanding.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR has welcomed the move, calling it a step toward challenging stereotypes and empowering women who wear the hijab.
CAIR Executive Director Afaf Nasher said the recognition reflects New York’s commitment to diversity.
World Hijab Day, now in its 12th year, was founded by Nazma Khan in 2013.
The day aims to highlight the challenges hijab-wearing women face and promote inclusion and understanding.
Nasher thanked Sen. Persaud for her advocacy and support.
