Trump offers federal workers buyouts to cut costs
The Trump administration is offering buyouts to nearly all federal employees, aiming to save taxpayers $100 billion a year.
Workers must decide by Feb. 6 if they want to accept the deal, which provides eight months’ pay.
A key part of the plan is ending remote work.
Employees are expected back full-time in offices.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said taxpayers deserve workers who “actually show up.”
Those unwilling to return can opt for the buyout.
A government-wide email outlined the new accountability measures.
Officials say only 6% of federal workers are in the office full-time, which they call “unacceptable.”
The buyouts exclude military, postal workers, and security roles.
The administration expects 5-10% of eligible employees to accept, reducing the federal workforce and cutting costs.
Employees who take the offer will retain pay and benefits until September 2025.
