Global tourism rebounds to pre-pandemic highs
Tourism roared back in 2024, nearly matching pre-pandemic levels.
A United Nations report has found that 1.4 billion international tourists traveled last year, just 1% below 2019’s record.
Key regions, including the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, surpassed pre-pandemic arrivals.
The Middle East led the recovery, with 95 million visitors, up 32% from 2019.
Africa saw a seven percent rise, hosting 74 million tourists, while Europe welcomed 747 million, a growth of one percent.
Asia-Pacific showed strong recovery, with a 33% surge in arrivals, though still 13% below 2019.
The Americas reached 97% of pre-pandemic levels.
Global tourism exports hit a record $1.9 trillion, which experts say reflect the sector’s economic strength.
Tourism receipts grew to $1.6 trillion, with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and El Salvador showing exceptional revenue gains.
Analysts expect tourism’s recovery to continue in 2025, though they say rising costs and sustainability concerns loom.
