CAIR labels Northwestern “hostile campus” in new report
The Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR has named Chicago’s Northwestern University among 14 “hostile campuses” for Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, and Jewish communities.
The announcement follows the launch of CAIR’s “hostile campuses” website, which highlights discriminatory incidents on college campuses.
The website serves as a resource for students and families to promote supportive learning environments and encourages reporting of campus hostility.
CAIR’s report also cites Northwestern’s low standing in the 2025 Free Speech College Rankings.
As well, it notes a civil rights complaint alleging anti-Palestinian discrimination filed by students at the Pritzker School of Law in 2024.
Additionally, the report referenced the arrests of four of the university’s employees in July 2024 for their involvement in a free-Palestine protest.
NU was first flagged as an “institution of concern” last October, joining the University of Chicago and Columbia University on the list.
CAIR’s campaign aims to empower prospective students to make informed decisions about campus environments.
Northwestern President Michael Schill acknowledged past challenges but emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering a safe and open environment for learning.
