Hunter Biden prosecution defended by special counsel
Special Counsel David Weiss has defended prosecuting Hunter Biden on tax and gun charges.
In a report to Congress, Weiss dismissed criticism from President Joe Biden, who recently pardoned his son.
The years-long investigation led to Hunter Biden admitting guilt to tax evasion and a jury convicting him on gun charges.
Weiss rejected claims the charges were politically motivated, stating they were “proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Prosecutors allege Hunter Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes while living lavishly.
Weiss argued these were serious offenses, not minor infractions.
The report also highlighted the conviction of ex-FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who lied about the Bidens and was jailed for six years.
Weiss cautioned against politicizing the justice system, saying it erodes public confidence and undermines fairness in law enforcement.
In 2023, Hunter Biden was charged with lying on a gun application about his drug use.
In a separate case, he faced three felony tax charges and six misdemeanors, including failure to file taxes, tax evasion, and filing false returns.
