Trump’s defense pick faces tough questions on women in military
President-elect Donald Trump’s defense secretary nominee faced heated scrutiny during his Senate confirmation hearing this week.
Senators grilled Pete Hegseth over past remarks opposing women in combat roles, labeling them “brutal” and “disrespectful.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also challenged Hegseth to address comments suggesting mothers should not serve in combat.
Hegseth denied disparaging women in the military and pledged to treat all service members with dignity and respect.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen questioned how Hegseth would reassure 400,000 active female troops about their career progression.
Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the nominee’s rapid shift in views, calling it insincere.
Hegseth also faces allegations of sexual assault, excessive drinking, and financial mismanagement.
While he has vowed to uphold high standards for all military roles, his nomination remains controversial.
Trump’s presidency begins next Monday, marking his return to the White House after four years.
