Rising call for universal healthcare: 62% of Americans want government coverage
A recent Gallup poll reveals that 62% of Americans believe it is the government’s duty to ensure that everyone has healthcare coverage.
That marks the highest support in over a decade.
This comes amid heightened scrutiny of the for-profit health system, especially after the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Support among Republicans has grown from 22% to 32% since 2020, while Democratic backing remains strong at 90%.
Observers say the poll underscores growing dissatisfaction with the current system.
In 2013, only 42% of Americans believed it was the government’s responsibility to make sure everyone in the country had health coverage.
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield last week also faced public outcry and was forced to reverse a decision to slash coverage for anesthesia care.
President-elect Donald Trump and other Republicans, who are set to control both chambers of Congress starting in January, have indicated plans to weaken the popular, government-run Medicare program.
They are promoting Medicare Advantage, which is administered by for-profit companies like United and is already used by half of Medicare beneficiaries.
