Mexican president seeks new agreement with Trump to redirect deportations
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is negotiating with President-elect Donald Trump to ensure deported immigrants are returned directly to their home countries rather than Mexico.
As Trump prepares for his second term, he has vowed to deport undocumented immigrants en masse, potentially escalating the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Sheinbaum has said more than 10.9 million Mexican immigrants could face deportation.
She stresses Mexico’s responsibility to welcome its nationals and is seeking an arrangement to avoid Mexico becoming a default destination for all deportees.
Trump’s previous immigration policies, including Title 42 and “remain in Mexico”, were criticized for human rights violations.
Mexico’s past compliance was driven by threats of economic tariffs.
Analysts say Sheinbaum is advocating for a change in these dynamics, promising updates as new strategies involving Mexican consulates are developed.
