Senators rally for ERA certification as GOP gains power
In a significant push for gender equality, 46 senators have urged President Joe Biden to certify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) before the GOP-majority term.
The ERA, passed by Congress in 1972 and ratified by 38 states by 2020, seeks to guarantee equal legal rights regardless of sex.
Despite fulfilling ratification prerequisites, its formal recognition remains pending.
This certification would solidify its inclusion in the Constitution, potentially challenging recent restrictive state-level abortion laws.
Senators, including Independents Angus King and Bernie Sanders, but excluding Joe Manchin, highlighted the ERA’s crucial role in safeguarding reproductive rights nationwide.
This appeal coincides with proactive measures by advocacy groups and planned rallies in Washington.
It emphasizes the urgency of federal action to uphold sex equality and reproductive freedom.
