Israeli airstrike kills top Hezbollah commander in Lebanon
The Israeli army has said it killed Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, in an airstrike on southern Beirut this month.
Hezbollah has confirmed the killing.
Safieddine was Hasan Nasrallah’s heir apparent.
This strike, which occurred about three weeks ago in the Dahieh area, also reportedly killed Ali Hussein Hazima, commander of Hezbollah’s Intelligence Headquarters, along with several other senior commanders.
The Israeli military said more than 25 members of Hezbollah’s intelligence division were present during the attack, including key figures in aerial intelligence.
Safieddine, a member of Hezbollah’s Shura Council and cousin to former leader Hassan Nasrallah, was considered a top contender to succeed him.
As tensions escalate, Israeli forces have intensified airstrikes in Lebanon.
