More than a dozen states sue TikTok over child privacy violations
A number of states are suing TikTok, claiming that the app was deliberately designed to keep young people hooked on the service.
The lawsuits allege that the company is duping the public about the safety of the app.
The lawsuits were filed separately in 13 states, as well as the District of Columbia.
They say TikTok violated consumer protection laws and contributed to a teen mental health crisis.
The lawsuits are asking courts to impose financial penalties on the company for allegedly violating the child privacy law, the SCOPE Act, which was enacted in September.
The company has been accused of failing to provide parental control tools, verify guardians, and protect minors’ personal data.
In the US, 170 million people use TikTok.
TikTok’s US revenue reached $16 billion in 2023.
