CAIR cheers California bill supporting students’ right to fast
The California chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) is celebrating the signing of Assembly Bill 2377 by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
This new legislation guarantees K-12 students the right to observe religious fasting with appropriate accommodations during physical education classes.
Authored by Assembly member Luz Rivas, the law ensures that fasting students can either participate in modified exercise routines or complete alternative academic assignments.
CAIR’s Hussam Ayloush praised the bipartisan effort, highlighting the importance of this bill for California’s diverse communities, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
With many students fasting during significant periods like Ramadan and Yom Kippur, AB 2377 aims to support their physical and mental well-being while ensuring they receive credit for PE courses.
