California apologizes for slavery
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an official apology to Black Californians acknowledging the harm caused by slavery and centuries of discrimination.
It is part of the state’s commitment to address its past injustices, recognizing the impact of racially motivated laws on the lives of Black people.
California Assembly member Reggie Jones-Sawyer, who authored the bill, said, “Healing can only begin with an apology.”
Newsom has also enacted several measures from the state’s reparations task force, which spent months researching the long-term effects of racism on descendants of enslaved people.
That culminated in a comprehensive report last year.
California’s apology and measures follow similar initiatives by Colorado and New York, which observers say reflect a growing recognition of the need for reparative justice.
