North Carolina removes 747,000 voters
The State Board of Elections of North Carolina has removed 747,000 individuals from its voter registration list over the past 20 months.
Officials say many were deemed ineligible due to failure to update their addresses after moving within the state, or by not participating in the last two federal elections.
Other removals were due to deaths, felony convictions, out-of-state relocations, and personal requests.
The voter roll purge comes amid a Republican lawsuit accusing North Carolina of not addressing complaints about ineligible voters.
The purge could affect the tight race for the presidency, as North Carolina is a critical swing state in the November election.
It is also home to a tough gubernatorial contest between Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein.
