Hate crimes against Muslims, Palestinians soar in Chicago
Hate crimes against Muslims and Palestinians in Chicago have surged by 196% since last October, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR.
The spike coincides with Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, with incidents reported in workplaces, schools, and public spaces.
CAIR’s Maggie Slavin highlights that people face backlash for showing solidarity with Gaza, facing punishment at work and sanctions on college campuses.
Slavin criticizes inconsistent police responses, citing a recent attack on a Palestinian-owned cafe in Uptown that wasn’t initially classified as a hate crime.
She compares the current atmosphere to post-9/11 federal surveillance, calling the situation “scary.”
She also expressed frustration over the misuse of the term “antisemitism” to censor criticism of Israel’s policies.
