Germany begins Afghan deportations following knife attack in Solingen
Germany has deported 28 Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan.
This is the country’s first deportation flight since the Taliban re-took control of the country in 2021.
The deportees were previously convicted of crimes and residing illegally in Germany.
They were sent home following a fatal knife attack in the city of Solingen on August 23.
This attack killed three people and led to charges of murder and terrorism against the perpetrator.
It has also intensified Germany’s debate on migration and counterterrorism.
As a result, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to expedite deportations and implement stricter security measures.
The German government has also announced a package of reforms including tighter gun laws and enhanced counterterrorism efforts.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stresses that while direct talks with the Taliban are off the table, Germany will continue its efforts to manage irregular migration and security threats.
