7 Uyghur brothers sentenced to 17 years in Chinese-occupied Eastern Turkistan
The Chinese government has sentenced seven brothers from a prominent Uyghur family to prison terms between nine and 17 years.
The Obulqasim brothers were active in construction and trade in Chinese occupied Eastern Turkistan or Xinjiang.
Chinese authorities detained them for charitable work and overseas activities they deemed suspicious.
Their sentences are part of a broader crackdown on Uyghurs by the Chinese government, with up to 1.8 million Uyghurs detained under pretexts of separatism and terrorism.
Observers say the case highlights China’s intensified repression of Uyghur culture and community support.
