AOC slams Trump and highlights Gaza crisis in rousing DNC speech
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) made a strong statement on the genocide in Gaza during her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, commending Vice President Kamala Harris for “working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and bring the hostages home.”
The New York congresswoman, who has been vocal in her criticism of Israel’s actions, described the situation in Gaza as an “unfolding genocide.” Many progressives are looking to Harris to adopt a new tone on Israel, a stance that could play a crucial role in the upcoming election.
Ocasio-Cortez delivered a rousing endorsement of Harris, framing her as the right leader for working Americans. “America, when we knock on our neighbor’s door, organize our communities, and elect Kamala Harris to the presidency on November 5th, we will send a loud message that the people of this nation will not go back,” she declared. “We choose a new path and open the door to a new day: one that is for the people and by the people.”
Greeted with loud applause and chants of “AOC! AOC!” from the crowd in Chicago, Ocasio-Cortez leaned into her own story to promote Harris’ candidacy. She recounted her journey from working as a bartender just six years ago to defeating a 10-term Democratic incumbent and rising to Congress. Her speech highlighted Harris’ connection to the middle class and her commitment to fighting corporate greed, reproductive rights, and civil rights.
Ocasio-Cortez also issued a stark warning against reelecting Donald Trump, calling him a “two-bit union buster” who “would sell this country for a dollar.” She emphasized the importance of helping Harris win, framing it as a battle against Trump’s greed and self-interest.
Her full-throated endorsement of Harris marked a shift from previous concerns she had expressed about replacing President Biden at the top of the ticket. On Monday, however, those doubts were gone, as she pledged her support for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, promising they would be leaders for all Americans.
As the election approaches, Ocasio-Cortez urged Democrats not to be complacent, emphasizing the need to fight hard over the next 78 days to secure victory. “Just because the choice is clear to us does not mean that the path will be easy,” she said. “We will have to pour every ounce, every minute, every moment into making history on November 5th.”
