US expands online appointment zones for migrants in Mexico
The Biden administration will allow migrants in Chiapas and Tabasco, Mexico, to apply online for US entry appointments, easing pressure on Mexican authorities and reducing risks for asylum-seekers.
This expansion of the CBP One app zone aims to streamline the application process and reduce the need for perilous journeys through Mexico.
The change, which was requested by Mexico, will soon provide access to one of over 1,400 daily appointments without the need to travel to northern Mexico.
This move is expected to further reduce illegal border crossings and improve bilateral relations.
With a recent decline in illegal entries and increased Mexican enforcement, the new measure reflects a collaborative effort to manage migration flows and enhance safety for migrants.
In June, the US suspended asylum processing for those who enter the country illegally.
US officials said arrests for illegal crossings plunged 30% in July from the previous month to the lowest level of Joe Biden’s presidency and the lowest since September 2020.
