Judge dismisses classified documents case against Trump
US district judge Aileen Cannon has dismissed the criminal case against Donald Trump on charges that he illegally retained classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Monday’s ruling says the special counsel who brought the case was unlawfully appointed and funded under the US constitution.
The decision is expected to be challenged by special counsel prosecutors at the US court of appeals for the 11th circuit.
Prosecutors may also seek to have the case reassigned to a different judge if the ruling is overturned.
Trump was indicted last year with retaining national security documents at Mar-a-Lago, as well as obstructing the government’s attempts to retrieve.
He also partially defied a grand jury subpoena ordering him to return any classified documents to the justice department.
Trump had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
