Senator probes Justice Alito’s interview amid ethics allegations
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has initiated an investigation into Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito over what is being called an “improper” interview with the Wall Street Journal.
In it, Alito claimed Congress has no authority to regulate the Supreme Court.
The statement was made just before revelations about a luxury fishing trip funded by a GOP donor.
Whitehouse, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, said Alito’s comments raise concerns about offering opinions on pending legal issues.
Whitehouse filed an ethics complaint noting that Chief Justice John Roberts has not responded to it.
The senator emphasized Congress’ role in judiciary oversight and enforcing ethics’ law.
