Imran Khan acquitted by Islamabad High Court in cipher case
Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court has acquitted former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb announced the verdict on Monday.
This was after accepting the appeals of the former premier and diplomat against their convictions in the case.
The court order says they “shall be released forthwith, if not incarcerated in any other case”.
However, Khan is not expected to be released from prison due to Khan’s sentence in another case known as the iddat case.
As well, Qureshi was arrested in recent cases relating to anti-government protests held May 9.
Qureshi is on physical remand until Wednesday.
Khan and Qureshi have, since their incarceration last year, said the cases against them are politically motivated by opponents who want to see Khan and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, stripped of power.
