US boycotts UN’s tribute for late Iranian President
The U.S. on Thursday boycotted a United Nations tribute to late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died earlier this month in a helicopter crash.
Nate Evans, spokesman for the U.S. mission to the U.N., said the U.S. will not attend the tribute event for Raisi in any capacity.
He said the U.N. should be standing with the people of Iran and Raisi was involved in numerous, horrific human rights abuses.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Dennis Francis, president of the General Assembly, addressed assembly delegates after a minute of silence was observed.
